2 major religions

Today in class we learned about to 2 out of the 5 major religions. Those 2 where Christianity and Islam. Christianity has about 2.2 billion adherents. There geographic locations are in Europe, Americas, Southern Africa and there denominations are Catholic church, Eastern orthodox church and protestant. The founder of Christianity is Jesus Christ, they read from the bible and the Pope is the clergy for Christianity. They also believe Jesus Christ is human and divine. Then we learned about Islam. Islam has about 1.5 adherents and they are called Muslims. There geographic location is Indonesia, Middle east, and North Africa. Denominations are Sunnis(75%-90%) and Shiites(10%-20%). The founder is Muhammad(570-632) and their holy book is the Qur'an. Their beliefs is that they are monotheistic, Abrahamic and that they have five pillars(testimony, prayer, alms-giving, fasting, pilgrimage). Finally, Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah(god).

Reviewed over quiz questions

Today in class we reviewed over quiz questions. Some questions had to do with when each stage developed, when countries entered those stages, and which countries are in each stage. We went over the fact that the US is on the brink of entering stage 5. The only countries known right now to be in stage 5 are Italy, Japan, Portugal, Russia and partially Germany. We also talked about what makes up each stage. Such as stage 1 is that because it has a very high birth and death rate. How stage 2 is that because it has a high birth rate and declining death rate, rising population. Immigration and emigration is also a big deal when it comes to your population standards.

Today in class we took notes on Jared Diamonds Guns, Germs and steel. This book and documentary are about how the world became so unequal and what the facts are behind it. A short summary about his ideas is how chance advantages can lead to early success in a highly competitive environment. He is trying to figure out and express the idea of unequal opportunities presented in the world. One main idea is the white supremacy all over the world. People ask why power is determined by race.
